Hughes & Hughes – Prices were just too high

February 27th, 2010 Posted in Mediacontact.ie News 7 Comments

The closure of Hughes & Hughes is a genuinely sad moment for book lovers in Ireland, not to mention their over 200 staff. In recent years they have invested heavily in their stock and their shops, making the customer experience very enjoyable.

Unlike most independent booksellers, they carried a massive stock of titles across a wide range of interest areas. In particular, their childrens section was very good and a big hit with a play area full with plastic horses and arches built into book shelves.

In the analysis of the failure of the business in the media today there is mention of high rents, and the move by consumers online as the main reasons for the closure of the chain. The truth behind the collapse is a little more simple. Their books were just far too expensive, with many titles being more than twice the price they are on Amazon. It may be the prices were a direct result of the high running costs, but there is no way they could have survived by continuing to overcharge customers.

Just before Christmas we wanted to buy 60 copies to the wonderful “Tribes” by US marketing Guru Seth Godin to send to customers as a thank you present. I phoned around and the price in Hughes & Hughes was €16 per copy. We ended up getting the books on Amazon.co.uk for just €7.50 per copy. The price was the same on Amazon whether we were was getting one copy or 70.

Do you see now why Hughes & Hughes has gone out of business?

iTunes Store Reaches 10 Billion Downloads

February 26th, 2010 Posted in Music No Comments

Apple’s iTunes Store has reached a huge milestone: 10 billion music downloads since opening on April 28, 2003. Back then there was about 200,000 songs to choose from. Today music isn’t all they sell; with the evolution of the iPod and the creation of new products such as the AppleTV, iPhone, iPod touch and soon the iPad the iTunes Store now delivers audiobooks, podcasts, TV shows, movies, apps and games. To celebrate the occasion Apple is giving the purchaser of the 10,000,000,000th song a $10,000 iTunes card.

Free rugby ball with every Irish Independent – another sign that newspapers are in deep trouble

February 26th, 2010 Posted in Mediacontact.ie News, Newspapers No Comments

First thing this morning I visited my local Centra to buy two copies of the Irish Independent. It wasn’t to read some great ground breaking news story, or life-changing feature. It was to get not one, but two, of the free rugby balls that were being given away with this mornings paper.

The minute I heard the radio advertisement yesterday I was motivated to get my free rugby ball. You might be thinking my actions prove that the marketing works, and gifting free rugby balls is a great idea to boost circulation. Well you’d be wrong. When newspapers give away CDs or magazines it hints at their haemorrhaging circulation. Giving away a free rugby ball just confirms that the end is nigh for newspapers as we know them. What will it be next week, a free hurl, tennis racket, or hockey stick?

You see by the time I got to Centra this morning, I had already read the Irish Independent. My very efficient delivery man puts it in our letter box at 4am. (His van must be full of rugby balls today!) The two papers I bought to get my free gifts are in the boot of my car, and will go straight into the green bin. These copies will appear in the increased circulation today, but are absolutely no good to advertisers.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against free stuff in newspapers, but it needs to be related to the core newspaper for it to be in any way sustainable. The Guardian, who are struggling like the rest of the newspaper industry, have the best model. They give away booklets on fitness, history, children’s education and many other topics. The giveaways are good because, as products, they project the same qualities that motivate people to buy newspapers i.e. good journalism and quality pictures. They are also investing in new ways of delivering their newspaper through their website and iPhone application, which Jonathon Moore will be talking about at our conference Media 2020 on April 27th. http://www.mediacontact.ie/details-conference-81.html

In reality giving away gimmicks to boost circulation is like rearranging the seats on the Titanic for newspapers. Just think about it, if your core product is in trouble you change it, you don’t give something free away with it to make it look better. Imagine how it would work in another industry –  a free set of body armour with every Toyota maybe!

The death of imagination in public relations

February 25th, 2010 Posted in Media, Public Relations No Comments

Language and pictures are the two most powerful ways to get your message across. So ask yourself this question: why do people bombard newsdesks and journalists everyday with boring and dreary press releases?

Would not be easier to take a clever picture, than a poor one? Would it not be better to spend an extra ten minutes writing something fresh and lively, than something boring that no one is going to read?

Last year I sent out an email with the subject line “We would like to throw you out of a plane”. It was to promote a skydive event, where 50 journalists  jumped out of a plane on the one day (Yes they all had parachutes) . For eight hours we got a response every three minutes to that email. Even the emails that rejected our invite were interesting. Pat Kenny emailed to say he wasn’t interested. Bertie Ahern said he couldn’t because he had a broken leg, and in any case he’d done enough duckin’ and divin’ over the years! We were tickled pink when Senator Feargal Quinn said his wife wouldn’t let him, despite his pleading.

We spent a week making sure that the four paragraph email was just right – and it worked with the event being a huge success.

So the next time you’re going to send out a press release ask yourself the following questions:

1. So what?

Is what you have to say interesting? Will anybody care? Most importantly do you care yourself? Because if you don’t feel strongly about your message no one else will.

2. Do you have a killer headline?

Will your headline stop somebody in their tracks? Is it interesting enough to grab somebody’s attention who gets over 100 emails a day? Because if it isn’t then you are just chancing your arm.

3. Have you used imagination to sell your message?

Do you have great news? Do you have something to say that has never been heard before? Do you have a picture that will light up a page? To promote the impact that smoking litter is having in the UK, the charity Endcams commissioned a 30 meter high cigarette butt and placed it Trafalgar Square. They got media coverage all over the world.  You see imagination really works and will never cease to get results…

Why we love Youtube

February 25th, 2010 Posted in Mediacontact.ie News, Youtube No Comments

I probably spend more time watching stuff on Youtube than on tv and for that reason I’m going to dedicate a weekly column to it. There will be few words, just the most random of random video clips cause that’s what Youtube is all about and that’s why we love it!

I don’t watch One Tree Hill but clips like this are a great reason to start:
