Public service employees in the Netherlands face aggression and violence on the streets more and more often. Onlookers unfortunately do not intervene often enough when they encounter a situation like this. A live interactive billboard in Amsterdam and Rotterdam is used to place people in a similar situation witch confronts them with their inactivity.
We face a similar problem in Dublin but why can’t/don’t we come up with innovative ideas like this that will actually capture people’s attention. We want to see more creativity in the Irish media.
Most of you will be aware of Hitler’s comeback and second career as social commentator. The iPhone 4G story leaked and Hitler was all over it like a cheap suit. Ronaldo left Manchester United to join Les Merengues in Madrid and Hitler made sure people were aware of his displeasure.
These are just two of the 100s of parodies of the scene from Downfall, featuring Adolf Hitler. I would have linked to the videos, were it not for the fact they are no longer on Youtube.
Constantin Film, the company behind the film are not amused (unlike the millions of viewers who watched the videos) and have ordered Youtube to take down any video containing scenes from their film. They have obviously never been told that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Nor do they seem to have a sense of humour. Or business acumen.
The way people took hold of this piece of content and made it their own should be what companies dream about, but instead they wet the bed. Hundreds of people took the time to use the content and turn it into something valuable and shared it with their friends – millions of people saw the clips, many of whom would not have known about this scene and film otherwise. That’s not thievery, that’s free promotion! This is what Lawrence Lessig calls remix culture, an environment in which people can take a piece of content and add their creativity on top of it – it’s something all parties benefit from.
The director of the film, Oliver Hirschbiegel, sees the funny side – earlier this year he told the NY Times “”I think I’ve seen about 145 of them! Of course, I have to put the sound down when I watch. Many times the lines are so funny, I laugh out loud, and I’m laughing about the scene that I staged myself! You couldn’t get a better compliment as a director.”
Sadly the production company and copyright holder don’t see the funny side. We would like to take a moment of silence on this sad day.
Shoeboxes account for millions of tonnes of waste and the trainer and shoe lovers amongst us in this office have probably made a substantial contribution to that. PUMA on the other hand is on a mission to reduce its carbon, energy, water and waste “paw print”, and has decided to do away with the shoebox altogether. It has launched its Clever Little Bag, a single folded sheet of cardboard in a resuable, recyclable PET bag, designed to protect shoes from the time they leave the factory until the customer gets them home.
PUMA says the new packaging and distribution system will reduce the paper used for shoeboxes by 65% and carbon emissions by 10,000 tons per year. It plans to make the remaining packaging materials fully sustainable by 2015. Continue reading »

I’ve been trying to track this video down for the last week to show everyone (finally succeeded), it’s called Nike Grid, an experiential campaign meets ARG (Alternate Reality Game) that will take place in London tomorrow the 23rd of April and it’s all about running. Street running, infact. The Grid is London, North, South East and West across 40 postcodes, the entirety is your gameboard.
The idea is to run from phone box to phone box, street by street across London to claim the most streets in just 24 hours. For each phone box “check in” you’ll get points, and the more you run the more you get. Nike have also taken more than a little inspiration from FourSquare by issuing “badges” for speed, endurance and stamina over the event, with the whole thing tracked and broadcast through Facebook. Almost 40% of technology companies check out potential employees’ profiles on social media sites such as Facebook or LinkedIn, according to a survey by Eurocom Worldwide and Dublin based Simpson Financial & Technology PR.
The survey, which was conducted during January and February 2010, surveyed 286 senior level executives in technology companies mostly across the European region. 13% of respondents were from Irish technology firms.
The Eurocom Worldwide survey finds that just over a third (37%) of technology companies surveyed have a corporate blog, only slightly more than last year (33%). The major barrier to corporate blogging is that it is too time consuming, cited by 39% of respondents. Almost a third (32%) don’t see the value of it.
56% of those who blog do so to improve interaction with customers. Over a third (34%) blog to raise profile and thought leadership.
Despite a mixed reaction to blogging, almost half (45%) of those surveyed expect to increase their budget on social media over the next 12 months.
Just over a third (35%) of companies already have a page on Facebook. 23% have a YouTube presence. Almost three quarters (73%) network on LinkedIn with almost one in five (19%) on Plaxo.
In the last 18 months our course “Social Media Unspun” with Damien Mulley has proved to be a very popular introduction to the practical skills of social media for hundred’s of Irish businesses.
Many participants asked us to host an intermediate level course, to help people with more detailed knowledge of communications and social media to plan a communications campaign.
So we went out and got the best social media trainer around. On July 21st in the Camden Court in Dublin, Top UK guru Will McInnes will be hosting a one-day course entitled “How to build a social media campaign.”
Will is the Managing Director of NixonMcInnes, the UK’s largest specialist social media agency. A marketer by training, Will works with top brands like BMW, Channel 4, and Oxfam. He is evangelical about all things social media, but more importantly he is an inspiring translator. He monitors the geeky early adopter activity online and translates the concepts for marketers desperate to know how to apply these new online techniques. Continue reading »
Amnesty International Ireland has launched a nationwide hunt for people to take part in an exciting new social media project as part of its mental health campaign.
The project involves collecting video messages from all over the country for the next four weeks. People will record short messages on their mobiles, cameras and computers in support of the right to mental health. The messages can be recorded alone or in groups, at home, at school or at work. The videos will then be used to make a powerful campaigning film that will be launched across the web. Continue reading »
