Mediacontact Christmas Tips

So Christmas is fast approaching, a few of you may already be making everyone else in the office sick by being well on the way to being organised and having all your presents sorted! However the majority of you will be like me and reach Christmas Eve with nothing but good wishes for your nearest and dearest. So this year Mediacontact is aiming to help you get ahead of the game by giving our top Christmas buys for 2010, hopefully it helps, or at least makes the Christmas Eve dash a bit more focused!

- Dad – We’re starting with one of the toughest as its very easy to fall back on some new socks or a jumper when it comes to Dad’s. However we ve come across a couple of alternative gifts that might break the trend.

Firstly, every man wants to be him, and even though there is a vacancy at the moment, it’s highly unlikely your father will be the next Stig! However this Alarm Clock will at least mean he gets up every morning with the dream still alive!

Our second option is an answer to a problem that we all encounter in our daily office lives – How to keep a cup of tea warm until you actually have the time to drink it? Well we have The Answer! Now your dad can enjoy his cuppa in his own time!

- Mum – Another tough one, and even though we’ve scoured the web here in the Mediacontact office we re going back to an old faithfull – A gift bag from Lush.

Are you an Internet addict?

It took nearly 10 years for the author of this blog post to realise he was an internet junkie. What about you? Not sure? Here are five ways to figure out if you are a web addict.

5- You Wake Up to It: What’s the first thing that you feel like doing when you get up in the morning? Checking your emails, friends social profile updates on Facebook or Twitter maybe? Do you ever even shut down your PC or log out from your email accounts, instant messengers and social profiles, for that matter?

4- You Sleep With It: Wait a second, do you even sleep or you lose sleep because of it? Being online seems to be only thing on your mind when you’ve got nothing meaningful to do. And, the only ‘meaningful thing’ for you in the world is the internet. You’re online even while you gulp your dinner down and until you feel sleepy, if at all. When you see those friends online with an irresistibly inviting green status, you tend to ping them all for no good reasons. Did you not just talk to them over phone this afternoon?

3- You’re a Facebook Fanatic: Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/texaholic>  is everywhere! Facebook is the new internet for you and, now it’s even on your mobile. You feel good about that, don’t you? You loathe friends who are never on Facebook or have a FB profile. Worse, you define your closeness with friends depending on how often they update their FB profile or whether they like or comment on your status updates.

2- Don’t Tweet ‘n’ Drive: When was the last time you survived an accident? On the road? No, it was while you were running down the stairs, updating your Twitter profile <http://twitter.com/sushantsahoo>. You missed a step while trying to stick to the 140 character limit!

1- One Night Stand with Torrents: When it comes to watching movies, Torrents is a keyword for you. You download 10 movies at a time flipping all the internet security caution to the wind! Worse, you support a whole gamut of online pirated video networks to run amok across the internet. You stay up past midnight to oversee the downloading process, trying to adjust the setting to help the files download faster, and searching online tips to make your internet bandwidth speed up for quicker download of the movies on Torrents. Do you even go to sleep, only find yourself getting back up in the middle of the night to check the download status? Make no mistake, dude … you’re probably sick to the point of no return!

Asics knows motivation is everything

Check out this new, innovative, experiential campaign from ASICS America as part of the New York Marathon.

The campaign centered around creating personalised supporter messages for loved ones in the race, which would be triggered with RFID tags, displaying the individual messages on massive LED screens as runners passed selected sensor checkpoints in the Marathon.

ASICS set up a campaign site dedicated to taking images, video, messages, texts, tweets and Facebook comments of support for runners in the event. They also setup live video booths at the event, allowing friends and family to record their personal message.

A personalised message is a seriously powerful motivator in an event like this. It kind of reminds me of the Nike Chalkbot campaign that has been a big part of the Tour de France for the last two years. Motivation is everything…

New Twitter analytics on the way

With social media marketing increasingly taking a slice of the marketing budget pie, it will become more and more important to justify each euro spent. Especially as it seems that all social media activity seems to be held under the microscope.

So the announcement that Twitter have started inviting a select group of people to test their new analytics tool will sound like music to every social media specialists’ ears.

The above screenshot provides a sneak preview as to what the Twitter analytics dashboard might look like. Mashable claims the product will become available to all users by the end of the year.

The screenshot highlights various aspects such as the number of mentions, retweets and unfollows on a daily trend graph. Whilst interesting, this does not seem to provide much more than other tools out there already. But having control of the firehose of messages and all Twitter-related content will surely provide Williams and co with a great advantage, especially when they will combine the data with their Promoted Tweets and other monetisation products.

A spokesperson for Twitter said: “There’s a strong corporate demand for better monitoring and analytics tools, and we want to help developers take advantage of this significant opportunity. For example, yesterday we partnered with Gnip, which will sub-license access to public tweets and give developers an efficient way to access the Twitter stream for analytics purposes.”

How to improve your online share of voice

Buzz around new brands has always been there, but now, with the existence of social media, it is bigger than ever. Every brand, product and service is being discussed, reviewed and sometimes bashed online. The buzz around this is hard to control for brands. Of course, this is not a problem when the buzz in positive, neutral buzz is good for the brand awareness and the online share of voice, but when the buzz is negative it might become a very big problem.

Some brands don’t even know what is being said, but when they do, what should they  do? How can a brand enhance its (positive) share of voice?

Being a social media specialist is being like a long-term spin doctor: How can you use all the buzz generated online to your advantage? To do that, we need to look at the different types of sentiment in the buzz and how to deal with them.

1. Negative buzz
Let’s start with the hardest. There are a lot of types of negative buzz. There are people complaining about your product or services, there are people who don’t like your brand and there are people who just really love to bash brands. And last, but not least, there is a category: Brands who deserve to be bashed (I’m not mentioning BP).

First of all, a brand needs to listen and needs to hear what’s being said about it. This way it can pinpoint the exact problem.  And unfortunately, if there is negative buzz, it is usually the brand’s own fault.

The people who just love to complain, or who are just bashing for the sake of it, should be ignored, because it is very hard, or maybe even impossible, to help these people or to change their minds.
The customer service team should pro-actively be present in the online spaces where people are complaining. They should be helping them where possible so the negative buzz can be reduced and customers can feel heard.

In the meantime the company has to work as hard as possible to fix the problem internally.

2. Neutral buzz
Neutral buzz is good for the share of voice online and the brand awareness, but it is also an opportunity. These people/ websites are willing to talk about your brand so with a bit of effort they are probably willing to talk about your brand in a positive way instead of a neutral way. Interact with them and try to make them part of the brand.

3. The positive buzz.
Positive buzz is great but … why leave it at that? There are customers and websites out there who like your brand. A brand has to reach out to them and has to try to help them to create even more buzz. Give them a digital bullhorn to shout even harder. This will not only be beneficial for the positive share of voice online, but in the long term the market share can profit from these people.

By doing this, customers might even turn into ‘brand fans’. These fans are more loyal to the brand and therefore spend more money on your brand. It’s good for the brand’s image and they might even recommend the brand to other people, resulting in a higher market share.

Gaiety’s mobile app

Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre now has a mobile phone app. Made by Dublin-based Strategem iLabs, the app allows users to view information about shows, book new and forthcoming shows directly, and receive special offers. It reflects a move by Strategem into the mobile market.

If kids ran Mi World

Miwadi has launched a tongue-in-cheek multimedia campaign called Miwadi festo, which imagines a world run entirely by children.

The brand is seeking ideas from children about what they’d like to see done. So far, contributions have included the notion that little boys would be given super powers and girls provided with fairy wings to get to school. The website is www.miwadifesto.com.

Cork News scoops four design awards

The Cork News has won awards in four categories of the European Newspaper Design Awards. The winners were revealed on Monday, November 15th.

The Cork News is one of only five Irish newspapers to make the cut this year, scooping an unprecedented four awards in the following categories:
· Front Pages
· Sectional Front Pages
· Local Pages
· Visualisation

A total of 219 newspapers from 27 countries participated in the 12th European Newspaper Awards. This year, the 12 members of the international jury came from eight countries: Norway, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland and Germany. The jury met for two days at the Hotel Park Inn in Kaarst near Dusseldorf.
