Google has admitted that despite as
surances to the contrary, it has in fact failed to delete data collected by its street view cars through open WiFi networks as far back as 2010.
Information collected included passwords and emails and affected a number of European countries including Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Austria.
Google maintains that the data was collected unintentionally and not deleted due to human error. They also insist that the data has never been used commercially.
The company’s Global Privacy Counsel Peter Fleisher said that they are prepared to delete the data but are awaiting instructions from the Information Commissioner on how to proceed.
