Google Circles will they, won’t they?
Is Google planning to launch a new social network this summer? That was the rumor du jour as the high-profile South by Southwest festival kicked off in Austin Texas, after ReadWriteWeb reported hearing that the search giant would launch a service offering photo, video and status message sharing. But the blog has now updated its story to say Google has denied Circles even exists.

Google’s Chris Messina, who was rumoured to be one of the leaders of Circles, said that he “didn’t know what [the story] was talking about.”

Canvas from the creator of 4chan
Meanwhile at South by Southwest, Christopher Poole, the 23-year-old founder of notoriously popular image board 4chan, has announced an new web site called Canvas. While 4chan’s dark appeal comes from being a source of racy pictures, comments and Internet memes, Canvas will be a “modernised, re-thought message board,” reports Chris Dannen at Fast Company, though he compares Poole’s introduction of the site after 4chan to “your daughter bringing home an ex-convict for dinner and saying he’s actually a ‘really good guy.”

GroupMe wins SXSW Breakout Award
Also mobile app GroupMe has picked up the SXSW Breakout Award. GroupMe, an app for Android, BlackBerry and iPhone, makes it possible to share text messages, photos and locations privately with selected groups of people. The service also works on any phone that can handle text messaging.

The South By Southwest (SXSW) conference is seen as a good indicator of trends in technology services – both Twitter and Foursquare received boosts from the event – so GroupMe will be hoping that this award brings a spike in usage.
