Connecting Simon Amstell

March 6th, 2012 Posted in Humour, Twitter No Comments

If you’ve recently joined Twitter and found it tough to get into the swing of things, don’t fret – Simon Amstell is much worse at it than you are.

The UK presenter and comedian decided to take a very reluctant leap into cyberspace for his upcoming tour, ‘Numb’, but the technophobe is finding it difficult to get to grips with Twitter etiquette (and the internet in general).

With the help of friends like Jessicas Hynes and Cave, he is slowly being dragged into the world of social media and overcoming faux pas like not following his real life friends back. Despite his protests he’s now tweeting an average of three times a week.

Simon’s exploits are being documented by the Guardian and are worth a look if you like Twitter, British comedians, or both. Go to Project Amstell for video updates and @AmstellNumbTour for the end result.

Victoria Beckham crashes Irish website

February 7th, 2012 Posted in Humour, Twitter No Comments

The Irish Hospice Foundation’s website crashed following a tidal wave of traffic after Victoria Beckham included a link to the site in a tweet.

The former Spice Girl tweeted about a gift she received from Bono for the newest member of her brood, a book called ‘Peter and the Wolf’ that he produced with Gavin Friday for the charity back in 2003.

With 2.5 million followers, it did not take long for the volume of traffic to shut down the foundation’s website. We’re not entirely sure, but does this technically make Victoria an inadvertent hacker?

10 things you didn’t know about Kim Dotcom

February 7th, 2012 Posted in Hackers, Humour No Comments

Kim Dotcom is the notorious and flamboyant founder of Megaupload, the file sharing website that was dramatically shut down a fortnight ago amid a storm of debate surrounding SOPA, PIPA and digital piracy. Until then he was relatively unknown to most of the world, but now all eyes are on him as he is detained in New Zealand on suspicion of leading a global criminal conspiracy to pirate films, music and television shows. Here are ten good, bad and ugly facts about this interesting figure.

1. His birth name is Kim Schmitz. He legally changed it to Kim Dotcom in 2005 and also goes by the monikers Kim Tim Jim Vestor and Kimbles.

2. He is a massive 6ft 7inches tall and weighs 285 pounds.

3. He is married with three children.

4. Until recently he held the title of world’s top player of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Since his arrest he has dropped to second place.

5. He has dual German-Finnish citizenship but grew up in Kiel, Germany.

6. He once sent an email to new neighbours who were concerned about his previous criminal convictions, stating that he was a ‘good boy’ and that they could either ‘call Interpol, the CIA and the Queen of England and try to get me on the next plane out’ or ‘give me a chance to do good for New Zealand.’

7. His (seemingly extravagant) house contains a panic room, where he was found with a sawn-off shotgun on the day of his arrest after police cut through the wall.

8. He has a long string of previous convictions including hacking offences, insider trading, embezzlement and, of course, copyright infringement.

9. He set up the Young Intelligent Hackers Against Terrorism, an effort to find Osama Bin Laden by hacking into Arab banks and websites.

10. He has a love of fast cars and has participated in the Gumball Rally across Europe. He would often upload videos of his exploits on YouTube.

@SRubenfeld: Silver lining of the down Blackberry: The battery didn’t die in three hours today.

@Pogue: New app transfers your Blackberry data (contacts, calendar, texts etc) into an iPhone. Good timing much?

Fake BBC website causes a stir

August 16th, 2011 Posted in Humour No Comments

Not for the first time, the BBC has been the subject of a ridiculous hoax. Many people browsing news online last week would have come across a website with the address news-bbc.net, a very convincing fake version of the company’s actual news site, bbc.co.uk/news.

The site has now been taken down by its owner, Andrew Firth, but at one point ran such stories as ‘Gordon Brown admits affair with Ann Widdecombe’, as well as claiming that Philip Schofield, one of ITV’s This Morning presenters, had been kidnapped by a gang demanding a £5 million ransom. It also linked to real stories from the original BBC news site.

There have been several other spoof sites of the BBC in past years, but they have stated that they are ‘considering our options’ with regard to taking action against Firth. The web address of the site now displays a lovely collage of photos of Coronation Street’s Ken and Deirdre Barlow.

Do you need a social media detox?

July 27th, 2011 Posted in Humour, Infographic, Social Media No Comments

If you answered that question in 140 characters or less, or felt the urge to ‘like’ it, then yes, you probably do. Here are the ten most common symptoms of social media addiction, as per this cool infographic by column five.

1. Tweet Speak: You find talking at any length greater than 140 characters to be both vexing and boring. You often refer to real people by their twitter handles, e.g ‘@Kathy spent the weekend updating my profile #whatidoeveryweekend’.

2. Thumbs-up Paralysis: This can happen after engaging in a ‘liking’ rampage on Facebook. When you experience approval, or some kind of enjoyment in life, your thumb automatically extends into an upright position.

3. Retweet Depression: You are often thrown into bouts of depression when you discover that your tweets have not been retweeted enough. This symptom may worsen when you find that your Tumblr posts have not been reblogged or your Facebook status has not been ‘liked’.

4. Lol-tisms: Possibly the most severe symptom of all is when you use abbreviations such as ‘LOL’ and ‘LMAO’ in spoken conversations. Seek professional help immediately if this occurs.

5. Account-Hoarding: You refuse to relinquish your accounts on various social media sites that have long since lost their popularity, in case they become popular again.

6. Supreme Mayor: You have achieved mayorship of over 30 different locations after consistently ‘checking in’. You may have also altered your daily route so that you can check-in as often as possible in as many different locations as possible.

7. Fake Farmer: You believe that plans to build your own farm cannot but be hugely successful since you are one of the top farmers on Farmville.

8. Ahab Syndrome: You are thrown into an uncontrollable rage when one of your frequented social networks is down. You exhibit tendencies similar to the tyrannical Captain Ahab in the novel Moby Dick.

9. Device Obsession: You have spent most of your income on multiple devices that automatically update all of your social networks while simultaneously registering you for new ones.

10. Offline Complex: In the off-chance that you leave behind your iPhone, iPad, laptop, Droid or any other mobile device, your lack of constant interaction with social media causes you to slip into a paranoid psychosis.

Top 5 Internet hoaxes of the week

June 13th, 2011 Posted in Blogs, Humour, Internet, Social Media, Youtube No Comments

The past week seems to have brought a ream of fresh Internet hoaxes to the world, all of which went viral within hours. From the racist McDonalds sign to the girl who really really loves cats, here’s the top 5 fake headlines that have hit the news recently.

1. Gay Girl in Damascus

Amina Abdallah Araf al Omari is a young lesbian woman living in Syria and author of the popular blog ‘A Gay Girl in Damascus’. At least, that’s what everybody believed. On 6 June her cousin posted on the site saying that Amina had been captured by the Baath party militia, sparking an online outcry. Then it emerged that the 200 images on her Facebook page were actually of a different woman named Jelena Lecic who lives in London. Finally last weekend Tom MacMaster, a 40-year old married man, confessed to being the sole author of all posts on the blog.

2. Debbie loves cats

Debbie the cat-lover went viral last week when she uploaded a video for the dating site ‘eHarmony’ that ended in tears when she started talking about how much she loves cats. The video was picked up by several blogs and news sites, but has now turned out to be fake. The poster of the video, hartmanncara, has another video on her channel where she acts (acting being the key word) as a pair of Siamese twins.

3. Facebook friends tattoo

Even less plausible but still widely reported was this video of a woman having her 152 Facebook friends’ profile pictures tattooed on her arm. She received a landslide of criticism for her ‘social tattoo’, but it all turned out to be a marketing stunt for a website that makes personalised products decorated with Facebook photos – NOT tattoos.

4. McDonalds racist sign

This badly counterfeited sign notifying McDonalds visitors that ‘African-American customers are now required to pay an additional fee of $1.50 per transaction’ appeared via Twitpic recently. It even earned its own hashtag #seriouslymcdonalds. Mashable revealed the hoax when they called the number on the sign and got through to KFC. McDonalds have since stated that the sign was most definitely not real.

5. Texas chainsaw massacre

This isn’t strictly an Internet hoax, but it did fool the entire Texas police force and most of the world. A woman who claimed to be psychic gave a tip off to police about a mass grave at the home of a long-haul trucker. Local media flocked to the location, as did the police, only to find nothing of the sort.

Labour are Red, Fine Gael are Blue…

February 14th, 2011 Posted in Humour, Internet, Politics, Virtual No Comments

If you’re stuck for the perfect Valentine’s Day gesture, the latest from Fine Gael’s election campaign can help…

They’ve devised a virtual Valentine’s Day greeting featuring romantic messages, which you can send by email. All you have to do is choose from a dashing boy in a tuxedo or a girl standing by a cliff, and then pick one of several inspiring verses such as :

“Love is all around me,
It’s everywhere I go,
Our policy plans are for you,
So come on and let us grow.”

“Roses are Red,
Violets are blue,
The country is broken,
But Fine Gael will fix it for you”

And finally:

“Fine Gael won’t break your heart,
Like Fianna Fail broke your bank balance.”

Spread the love the Fine Gael way here.

Probably one of the best campaigns you’ll see this year

In a clever attempt to differentiate its brand from other airline brands, JetBlue turned to YouTube and launched a series of videos that call attention to the common airline policies that anger customers.  Each video uses a hidden camera to capture customers’ reactions to airline policies applied to other aspects of daily life.

For example, a New York City taxi driver reclines his seat and explains the legroom policy in his cab to paying passengers or he tells passengers that they’re required to pay a $25 baggage check fee to carry luggage in the trunk of the taxi.  Other videos show an elevator ride destined to stop on every floor because it’s not a “non-stop” trip and a New York City street vendor pouring drinks into airline-sized disposable cups for customers rather than handing over the entire can.

As you can imagine, the reactions of New York City patrons are honest and amusing, and they perfectly support JetBlue’s message: “You wouldn’t take it on the ground. Don’t take it in the air.”

The videos work for one simple reason, JetBlue does offer more legroom, first checked bags are free, and you get the full can of Coke and a free snack no matter where you sit.  In other words, JetBlue offers tangible differentiators and clearly demonstrates why consumers shouldn’t settle for less.

The YouTube videos are just one part of a larger marketing push JetBlue is launching in target cities across the United States, which will include online, mobile, offline, ambient, and in-flight initiatives.  In other words, this is a well-strategised, fully-integrated marketing campaign.
