Irish Photographer featured in New York Times

February 16th, 2012 Posted in Ireland, Magazine, Newspapers No Comments

Irish Photographer Kenneth O’Halloran’s work has been featured on the cover of the New York Times magazine and as their cover story in last weekend’s edition.

His shots of property expos and showhouse openings and the subsequent ghost estates, as well as landscape shots of the Aran Islands and his ‘Life After Death’ project were all featured. The accompanying article by John Jeremiah Sullivan tells the recent story of Ireland from the author’s personal perspective.

As well as the print edition the New York Times have also posted a slideshow of some of pictures used with a narration by Kenneth himself (it’s well worth a listen). Times blogger Stacy Baker has also written a post about the photographer that gives an insight into his work and career.

You can see more of Kenneth’s work on his website.

Make a Magazine From Your Facebook “Likes”

September 22nd, 2011 Posted in Facebook, Magazine No Comments

Social software maker Sobees has released NewsMix for Facebook, a social magazine specifically designed for the world’s largest social network.

A bit like Paper.li for Twitter the NewsMix for Facebook application presents updates from the Facebook Pages you “like” in a magazine-like fashion.

The application joins Sobees‘ other NewsMix applications for web and iPad. The company’s primary goal is to create a digital newsstand relevant to each user and appropriate for each platform.

In the Facebook application, collected stories represent the articles, photos and videos as posted by Facebook Pages. You can also check out Facebook friends’ magazines and “like” Pages you discover as you browse.

The application will appeal to the subset of Facebook users who want a unique and aesthetically pleasing way to discover news items from their favorite brands, media companies and celebrities while on Facebook.

The association between “likes” and news stories in NewsMix may be a bit troublesome for others. Often, users “like” a Page just to get a temporary glimpse at its content or earn some fleeting reward. Thus, clicking the “like” button does not always indicate a genuine interest. So, while NewsMix does a decent a job at the presentation piece, it may not be showing users news they actually want to read.

Have a look at the application and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

BBC sells its magazines business

August 26th, 2011 Posted in Magazine No Comments

BBC Worldwide will sell 34 of its publications to private equity firm Exponent for £121 million in a deal which will be finalised by the autumn.

Radio Times, Top Gear, Good Food and Lonely Planet are among the titles to be sold, with the majority of staff moving to Exponent also. The BBC proposed the deal so that it could focus on its international video and digital offerings.

Exponent will gain all of the company’s non BBC-branded titles as well as stakes in the subscription operation Dovetail and the distribution firm Frontline.

BBC Worldwide will also sell 50 per cent of its shareholding in Worldwide Media, a magazine company in India, to Bennet, Coleman & Co. Ltd.

More magazine lets Facebook fans design issue

July 15th, 2011 Posted in Facebook, Magazine, Social Media, Social Network No Comments

To celebrate their 100,000th fan on Facebook, More magazine decided to let their social media savvy readers take over by editing their next issue.

The magazine has a loyal following both on and offline with a circulation of 188,265 and have also amassed 30,000 followers on Twitter. They decided to reward this not only by letting them take editorial control, but also by giving away £10,000 worth of prizes.

Editor Chantelle Horton said “You can’t have one-way conversations anymore. People are proud of being in the magazine, so they and their familites will buy it. I’m hoping this issue is a big seller and something we can build on and do again.”

It’s a great way of recognising a customer database that more publications and businesses should get invovled in. Check out their Facebook, Twitter, and website for yourself to see how they’re engaging with their readers.

When iAds meet Print Ads

October 5th, 2010 Posted in Advertising, Apps, Great Ideas, Magazine, Newspapers No Comments

This is a really cool way to engage an audience from a print ad.

AXA Insurance in Belgium recently released an iPhone app designed to help people in the event of an accident. So, to get their customers’ attention, they decided to launch it in an innovative kind of way. They bought traditional full page print ads, but combined them with a digital twist by mapping out a space to place an iPhone. Once  the iPhone  was in position the ad came to life though a video that matched the print ad’s creative, ultimately telling the story to each reader.

What do you think? Is this going to increase the declining print ad market once more?
