Linkedin gets gamified

February 7th, 2012 Posted in LinkedIn, Online Game, Online Games No Comments

We’re well used to Farmville, Cityville and the like by now – in fact playing games on Facebook seems like an entirely natural (if time consuming) activity, given the social nature of it. But a game for Linkedin? That’s new…

AXA have launched a direct business insurance service for small businesses, and to go with it they’ve created the first Linkedin-specific game. It’s designed to encourage small businesses (especially new ones trying to stake a claim) to ‘think about taking risks and what they need to ensure they climb the ladder of opportunity’.

The game is based on the classic Snakes and Ladders. Users log in with their Linkedin ID, play the game and then compare scores with peers in their network. It’s the first Linkedin game we’ve seen, but will it work, given that Linkedin is a business-oriented, straight-faced kind of site? Let us know your thoughts.

The Volkswagen Passat LinkedIn Challenge

May 9th, 2011 Posted in Advertising, Apps, Games, LinkedIn, Online Game, Online Games, Social Media, Social Network, Viral No Comments

The people at Volkswagen have long been pros at creating great viral ads; in February there was ‘The Force’ commercial, last year they gave us ‘The Fast Lane’, and let’s not forget the ‘Un-pimp Your Ride’ series a few years ago. This time however, they’ve moved onto social networks with the Volkwagen Passat LinkedIn Challenge.

The campaign is currently running in the Netherlands and is called ‘LinkedOut’. It’s an app and is based on the idea that the new Passat is as full of features as your LinkedIn profile is full of information. To be in with a chance of winning the car, LinkedIn users must challenge their friends, the objective being to have the strongest profile in the country.

Points are awarded for education, experience, recommendations and connections. The more points you get, the bigger your head gets (literally!), until one person is declared ‘out’ and the other ‘in’.

The game makes great use of the LinkedIn API and is the first branded LinkedIn game to reach the market. Watch a fun demo of the game here.

Extra points are awarded for travelling outside rush hour or for getting off a stop early and walking. The overall objective is to ‘win’ stations.

Relationship Status: It’s Complicated

January 24th, 2011 Posted in Facebook, Internet, Online, Online Games, Social Network 1 Comment

Family lawyers are now citing Facebook as a major factor in marriage breakdown, according to an article in the Telegraph last week. One in five of divorce cases last year contained references to the social network, with spouses developing online ‘flirtations’ with other people.

And if Facebook isn’t the a contributing factor in the break-up, many couples use the site as an opportunity to publicly humilate each other during divorce proceedings. One lawyer urged clients to stay away from Facebook during divorce as it can complicate things, especially if photos of new lovers are posted.

Things may have been taken too far, however: one couple mentioned in the article split up after the husband was found to be sleeping with an escort in the game Second Life.

Here me, I am playr

November 30th, 2010 Posted in Apps, Facebook, Online Games, Sport No Comments

Here is a hot-off-the-press trailer for what could just be a look at where the future of social gaming is headed, called I Am Playr, it’s a football-based game created by We R Interactive.

I Am Playr will combine a unique mix of online gaming, social integration, interactive videos and story telling through a pretty cool looking first person perspective. The idea is to give players the chance to experience being a football star from that first person perspective, that would include everything from signing the contract, training, scoring goals, partying and more … all with the aim of building up your player value on a global leaderboard.

It launches to private beta in December, and already has Nike as its major integrated sponsor. This is what the future of social gaming probably looks like, to some degree…!

McDonalds get on the Farmville bandwagon

October 18th, 2010 Posted in Advertising, Case Study, Great Ideas, Online Games No Comments

It was only a matter of time before McDonald’s created a branded farm on Farmville. Basically, McDonald’s became a “Neighbour Farm” to every player in the world for one day on the 7th of October, and allowed players to come and work on the McDonald’s Farmville Farm, helping to grow things like tomatoes and mustard seeds.

Players were rewarded with all sorts of virtual McCafe items that allows them to grow their own farms twice as fast! Plus, they also got a McDonald’s hot air balloon flyover for their efforts…
