Session One – 9.00 – 11.00 – Transmedia: The Evolution of Communications

The Future of Digital Storytelling: Nathan Hull – Digital Publisher, Penguin

- 2010 was a landmark year for digital publishing, with new words such as e-book, iPad and app entering the public domain.
- Consumer reading habits are changing, and publishers must think of new ways to put out content.
- New job titles have been created, such as Creative Technologists and Interactive Designers.
- Penguin has rebranded Spot the Dog as Spot for an e-book version, as well as Percy Jackson and Stephen Fry’s memoirs The Fry Chronicles. (http://bit.ly/gfvEx0)
- A library app for Percy Jackson has been developed, making a technology app a reading tool.
- Penguin got the author, Stephen Fry, involved in marketing the e-book. Fry speaks himself on the ‘My Fry’ visual index app, urging people to buy the e-book. See http://bit.ly/bF8TKR.
- Penguin uses apps to drive the purchase of print products. Paul Hoffman’s The Left Hand of God was Penguin’s first app for the iPhone in 2010. It featured snippets of paragraphs from the book, with the option to purchase the entire book.
- E-books currently account for 5% of all book sales in the UK and Ireland, and 10% in the United States.
- The key to a successful transition from online to print is to move at a pace.

Audioboo is the simplest way to share audio.

March 22nd, 2011 Posted in Mash, Mash 2011, Mediacontact.ie News, Social Audio, Social Platforms, Social Tools, Technology, Twitter No Comments

The CEO and Founder of Audioboo Mark Rock is due to speak at the Mash 2011 Conference in Croke Park, Dublin on May 10th 2011. You can find out more about Mash 2011 and the lineup by visiting www.mashmedia.ie .

Intro to Audioboo from Mark Rock on Vimeo.

Do you tweet? Then maybe you should Boo! Designed to work alongside Twitter and iTunes, AudioBoo is an audio blogging platform created especially for iPhone and Android devices. It’s like a multimedia Twitter, designed especially for mobile users.

Made possible by 4IP, (Channel 4’s unique funding program for interactive wares), and developed by BestBefore, AudioBoo is making use of various media formats, community-focused, and integrating with the most popular social platforms.

What’s a Boo

On paper, AudioBoo’s feature set reads excellently — it’s a tour de force of current buzzwords and trends. Using your smart phone you can record an audio message, the message pops up on your Twitter stream or Facebook page and a few more social media sites and there’s even an automatic, iTunes-compatible RSS feed for your followers to subscribe to.

The sign-up process is simple, taking place either on your smart phone or on the desktop version of the web site. Plus, once signed in, it only takes a couple of clicks to link your Twitter account and activate Facebook Connect. The site even grabs your Gravatar, saving the hassle of uploading a profile picture.

Making the Perfect Boo

Once logged in on the iPhone, the app displays the main Boo stream, similar to Twitter’s public stream. And like Twitter if you hear a boo that you like you can follow that person via the Follow button. They will then appear in a separate column in your account, which makes it simple to keep up to date with their boos. You can find people by listening to featured or popular boos, as well as searching for things you’re interested in.

The focus throughout the app is on simplicity and ease of use. This is reflected in the audio-recording interface — there’s no friction with the technology and so creating a Boo is so quick it retains a real sense of fun throughout.

5 online tools grabbing headlines this week

February 14th, 2011 Posted in Social Audio, Social Media, Social Platforms, Social Tools No Comments

Adam Vincenzini of ParatusCommunications.com wrote a great blog post about the tools and platforms that have been making headlines in the last seven days. This week, Facebook announced more changes to brand pages, another platform was compared to Quora and ‘social audio’ made some noise. Here are the key takeouts from the week and how they might impact upon users and organisations as a result.

1. Twitter gets smarter with My6Sense – My6Sense is a piece of technology that delivers ‘digital intuition’ – in other words, it works out what is important to you based on your online / mobile behaviour and filters your content accordingly. This technology has now been integrated with Twitter, giving users easier access to quality content. Read more about it at RWW.

2. New site tells shoppers WhereToGet.It – Just say you’ve spotted a pair of shoes in a magazine but can’t find out who the stockist is? Head over to wheretoget.it and your prayers might be answered. Full story on Tech Crunch.

3. Facebook lets you be you with new features – One of the biggest problems with Facebook has been not knowing who you are when you are switching between profiles and pages. This latest update gets around this by allowing you to switch between being an admin or yourself. Read more about the other changes at AllFacebook.com.

4. AudioBoo v SoundCloudSoundCloud, a tool that brings audio to your social media experience and profiles, hit the 3 million subscriber mark this week, giving media a chance to create the latest online war (this time against AudioBoo). The important takeout is the fact that audio is becoming increasingly more popular and opportunities exist to capitalise on this interest. Read more about the impending audio war at The Next Web.

5. The ultimate ‘to do’ list? Wunderlist was in the news this week on the back of some developments to its offer / product. To be fair, Wunderlist is more than just a to do list, it helps people collaborate online and manage tasks accordingly. Worth a try.
