Does it spark your pinterest?

February 7th, 2012 Posted in Social Media, Social Network, Social Platforms, Social Tools No Comments

Pinterest is fast becoming the social network of the moment. It will celebrate its second birthday in March and recently hit the 3 million user mark. Founded by designer Evan Sharp, it’s an invite-only platform with the mission to ‘connect everyone in the world through the things they find interesting’.

The site is laid out in the style of a bulletin-board and works in the same way. Sharp and co-founders Paul Sciarra and Ben Silbermann started out with the goal of creating a place where you can go to upload or collect things on the web and organise it the way you want to.

The bulletin-board style (now the visual hallmark of the site) is what makes it different. Instead of the linear feed common to so many other platforms, Pinterest displays things in a grid, making it feel more personal and more like a collection.

Pinterest is great for anyone who is in any way visually inclined, and has really taken off with interior designers, fashionistas, architects and event planners. The appeal is two-fold; on the one hand it’s a great place to go to see things that are interesting to you. On the other hand, it can help with projects in real life – anything from craft projects to weddings and birthday parties, to designing a dream home.

Have a look at Whole Foods, West Elm and the Today Show’s pinboards to see how using Pinterest can bring a more personal feel to your brand.

Facebook to launch music service

September 13th, 2011 Posted in Apps, Facebook, Music, Online, Social Tools No Comments

Rumours are flying around cyberspace that Facebook will launch their own music streaming service very soon. They are reportedly partnering with Spotify, MOG, and Rdio, which will allow users to play tracks through an in-built player while navigating through the social network. It will also be seamless through page loads.

Facebook may automatically post updates to users’ streams as they listen to tracks, but it is not yet known where on the page the player will be positioned.

Another feature will be the ability to ’scribble’ tracks, i.e. When a user listens to a song, information about it is stored in a single database and published to their music profile so that other users can see what artists they most listen to and suggest music, etc.

The service is expected to be unveiled at the annual developers’ conference, f8, which takes place on September 22nd. It’s also rumoured that their iPad app will be launched then too.

It will be given by communications guru Ewan McIntosh who co-directed the digital media campaign of the Scottish National Party (SNP) which lead to a majority win in the election earlier this year that, in theory, the voting system was set up to avoid.

The 3 best tips for using Twitter.

August 3rd, 2011 Posted in Apps, Social Media, Social Network, Social Platforms, Social Tools, Twitter No Comments

Many people say that there is far too much Twitter advice on the Internet since the micro-blogging site became popular. There are countless apps that do countless things with your account, and opinions are often divided on best practice. We came across these three tips that will help make everything else clear.

1. The mute button

If you use twitter regularly, you can’t keep your following count at a manageable level forever. There are always some people who you feel obliged to follow despite having little interest in their tweets, or despite them flooding your timeline. Mute apps come in extremely handy here – you can hide all tweets from a particular person or hashtag without having to unfollow them. Try Proxlet or Twalala for size.

2. Opt-in for Push

It can get very hectic managing a number of different social media accounts like Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc. etc. Especially when you receive e-mail notifications each time for each site. Apps such as Echofon send a message to your phone any time something important happens, like a reply to a tweet. This way there’s no need to be constantly online waiting. It also has a sleep function, so you can turn it off if it gets annoying.

3. Use saved search

Make it easy to find content of high interest to you by searching for topics and saving those searches. Every time you log in you can access the same search (which will be automatically updated). It’s a great way to keep track of certain topics outside of using hastags.

7 timing tools for twitter

June 10th, 2011 Posted in Apps, Digital comms, Media Tips, Monitoring, Social Media, Social Network, Social Tools, Twitter No Comments

Timing is especially important when it comes to Twitter. According to BuySellAds.com, of the millions of tweets produced daily just 39% provoke a reply or retweet. Of all tweets that do get a response, 85% only get a single reply.

With such a steady flow of chatter it’s easy for your tweets to get lost in the crowd, but not if you’re smart about catching your followers at the right time – namely, when they’re online. Here are 7 tools that will help your tweets gain the most reach through the magic of timing:

1. When to Tweet

The appropriately-named Twitter service, When to Tweet, analyzes when your followers tweet and then recommends the best times for you to tweet. It is a fairly simple and free service consuming your account’s data and creates one easy-to-understand graph.

2. Tweriod

Tweriod pulls Twitter data and generates a multitude of graphs consisting of weekend and weekday mentions, hourly breakdowns of online followers, and weekday and weekend online followers. Tweriod offers a well-rounded look at all areas of online impact including responses, active followers, and week and weekend differences.

3. Tweetstats

In addition to providing an excess of analytics, TweetStats looks at when your account tweets the most and when your followers tweet the most. TweetStats generates an easy-to-understand chart of tweet density in a 24-hour period.

4. Timely

Timely sifts through your account’s last 199 tweets, and accounts for the number of tweets that didn’t “reach their full potential.” Timely offers the four best times for your account to tweet based on follower’s engagement. If you sign up for Timely, you can access more analytics including more data on the times of tweets, retweets, mentions, and viewers in a time period. After analyzing your account, the service can auto-schedule tweets and adapt as your followers change Twitter behaviour.

5. SocialFlow

Not only does SocialFlow share information on click-throughs, mentions, and reach, it also pairs up this information with hourly frequency.  SocialFlow can also compare present tweet information with that of the past to further understand changes in follower and engagement behavior.

6. Crowdbooster

Crowdbooster asks a simple question, “how are my tweets doing?” and makes tweet-schedule recommendations based on in-depth analysis of impressions, retweets, responses, and followers. Crowdbooster will then explain why these times are best through a bubble-chart, similar to TweetStats.

7. TweetWhen

Hubspot’s TweetWhen offers two generated graphs: one for the most influential time to tweet and one for the most effective day to tweet.

How to build your community with better content

May 27th, 2011 Posted in Media Tips, Social Media, Social Platforms, Social Tools, Technology No Comments

We have long been followers of the philosophy ‘Content is King’. Creating interesting and informative content is a great way to build a community within your target audience. It draws the right people to your company website. It shows your expertise and gets people interested in your brand. But most importantly, good content travels.

Here are some pointers on how to achieve this, courtesy of OneForty:

Blog Often: There more often you blog, the more often people will return to your page to see what’s been happening. Hubspot and SEOMoz are two examples of businesses that create daily blog content, and hence have created communities and positioned themselves as experts in their fields.

Monitor Social Media: Understand the types of questions that your community members are asking on social media regarding your industry. Respond to those questions with good content. Set up a search terms and Twilerts for appropriate hashtags and industry terms. To enhance your content even more, do some research with Google Insights to make sure you’re targeting the right keywords with your content.

Write a Decent Headline: There’s a lot of clutter out there and a ton of content being shared. If you write a headline that makes your content sound appealing and helpful to your community, you’re much more likely to get them to read it. Good headlines have to mirror good content, however; if you’ve got a headline saying ‘10 good reasons why…’, make sure they’re good reasons.

Use different types of content: Offering a variety of content to your community is a great way to keep things fresh on your blog and keep your community coming back for more. Try writing ‘how-to’ and problem solving articles, conducting video interviews,  or using storytelling tools like Storify to curate content from relevant resources.

(We created Storify pages for the recent state visits – check them out here).
