TV3 announce cost cutting measures
23 March 09
Big cutbacks have been announced at TV3, with staff cuts and fewer domestically-produced programmes planned.
Twelve staff have been let go and pay will be cut by 15pc for executives and by 7pc for other staff. And the station's nightly sports programme Sports Tonight is to be axed.
In a statement, TV3's chief executive David McRedmond said it had no choice but to reduce costs in the current economic climate. He said the station had been outperforming the tv advert market, but it was not immune from the global downturn in advertising. He also blamed unfair competition from RTÉ, which had both licence fee and advertising revenue.
