Radio Kerry's Deirdre Walsh picks up Justice Media Award

| Radio Kerry's Deirdre Walsh of 'Kerry Today' picked up a Justice Media Award in the 'Local Radio' category for her two ground breaking interviews titled 'Laura's Story'. 'Laura's Story' is about a young woman who suffers from Down's Syndrome. When she was 19, she was allegedly sexually assaulted. Two eyewitnesses backed up her story. The gardai and DPP believed there was enough evidence to bring the suspect to trial. But even though Laura told a judge what she believed happened to her, her story was not accepted. Deirdre Walsh spoke to Laura's mother, Anne, about her family's hard-won efforts in taking the case to the European Court of Human Rights - thanks largely to the backing of MEP Kathy Sinnott and the pro bono assistance of their solicitor. While this story received national media attention, Deirdre Walsh pursued the story and revealed the ordeal of bringing the case to the European Court. |
