Is this the end for local papers?
14 April 09
The last year has been a torrid time for local media in Ireland, and all around the world. During the boom years (remember those) it seemed like not a week passed without a new paper launching, or an existing title selling for millions. Now that advertising revenues have collapsed, many of the local papers we love will cease to exist. The Voice Group has closed down many of its titles over the last eight months, and in the current climate no local paper is immune from possible closure.
Last week Mediacontact.ie read a very interesting feature in the Guardian about the bleak future of the traditional local newspaper in the UK, and how online titles will begin to flourish. We believe the same scenario will happen here.
