Leitrim Post another victim of downturn
12 May 09

The Leitrim Post, which was based in Carrick-on-Shannon, has closed in its third year.

A spokesman for River Media explained that the size of the advertising market in Leitrim is too small in the current economic climate to support the paper.

The Leitrim Post was launched in December 2006. It was strong on sport, particularly GAA, with editor Colin Regan being a member of the Leitrim senior football team. Its tabloid style also ensured its popularity among younger readers.
The other title in the county is the long-established Leitrim Observer, founded in 1904 and now owned by Johnston Press. According to ABC figures, Leitrim Post
circulation figures were over 4,000 - more than half of those of the Leitrim Observer. The Leitrim newspaper market is naturally tight, as the county's population of 28,000 is the smallest in Ireland.

Leitrim has no major urban centres, leading to a small advertising market. The Post had suffered a major fall in advertising revenue in recent months.

Three full-time editorial staff and two part-time photographers have been made redundant. Several other staff have been redeployed to other River Media titles.
