In praise of ... having your own quiz night
21 July 09

As a fun and cheap alternative to the usual Friday night down the pub, we held our own quiz night last week.

I became quiz master for the evening and along with my friend Mossy made out eight rounds of questions. Then last Friday night we gathered up as many friends as we could, and held the quiz night in our house. Myself and Niamh busied ourselves making a mountain of sandwiches for the gang. We were like mammies in the country preparing for a wake.

It was a case of Bring Your Own Beer, so all arrived with their packs of Carlsberg and Heineken under their arms.

The prize was initially going to be cinema tickets, but they wanted booze, so the prize ended up as a bottle of Jagermeister. The winners kindly shared it around and everyone got a shot each. It's pretty rough stuff.

We had eight rounds of questions with the usuals like general knowledge, history and literature, geography, music, sport, TV and movies, a picture round, and also a special 'Fun Round' which included personal questions about each other. Niamh wasn't too pleased when we asked how many times she has lost her passport. It's a shocking five times!

Afterwards, the guitar came out for a sing-song, and even later we spontaneously started into a game of charades. Sounds wild, doesn't it?

Anyway it was a great night of good craic, sandwiches and lots of beer. We were all in bed by 3am, and woke up without a hole in our pockets. It was certainly a recession-busting Friday night, and possibly a sign that we're getting on a bit. We probably wouldn't have been caught dead at this good wholesome fun at 21 and 22 years old. But now that we're all 23 and 24 ....
