New freesheet for Cork
27 October 09

A new weekly freesheet The Cork News, has been  launched in Cork. The paper says it offers a high quality read and good value for advertisers.

It was created in response to a gap in the market according to Managing Director Daniel Carey.

"There are various lower-quality papers that distribute in smaller numbers in various areas. This is an all-encompassing offer that covers a large area," says Carey.

There are ten people working on the paper full time, and contributers include broadcaster George Hook. "The staff are very Cork focused, with a media background," says Carey.

The Cork News claims to offer an upbeat approach to content and a full-colour offering, which can also be read online.

"Editorially we don't take ourselves too seriously - this is a 20 minute read over a cup of coffee, filled with Cork orientated stories" says Carey.

The paper's closest competition is the Cork Independent, and it will also be competing to an extent with paid-for dailies, such as the Irish Examiner and the city-based Evening Echo.

Carey said 38,000 copies are hand delivered to estates in Cork city, and the rest are sent out via bulk distribution to supermarkets and retail outlets.

The editor is Katie Mythen, who joined the paper from the RSVP group.
