Whelan is new RTÉ economics correspondent
10 November 09

RTÉ has announced that European editor Sean Whelan is to take up the post of economics correspondent.

The post had been vacant for nearly six months following George Lee's departure in May. Lee is now Fine Gael TD for Dublin South.

A long-term employee of RTÉ, Whelan joined the staff of the broadcaster in 1991, when he accepted a posting in the newsroom.

An accomplished journalist, he has worked in a variety of areas over his years with the station, including a well-regarded stint on the RTÉ News foreign desk.

On hand for the conflicts in the Balkans in the 1990s, he reported from the wars in both Bosnia and Kosovo. Since 1999, he has been based in Brussels and has served as RTÉ's Europe Editor since 2003.

Sean has a degree in history and politics from UCD, and a postgraduate diploma in journalism from NIHE (now DCU) Dublin.
