The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has announced funding of €4.1m for 31 television projects through 'Sound and Vision', the broadcasting funding scheme.

The scheme was established to support programmes dealing with the themes of Irish culture, heritage and experience, in the Irish and English languages, as well as programmes in support of adult literacy.

Significant grant support has been provided in this round for adult literacy, animation, drama and children's programming.

13 of the 31 projects funded are for Irish and bi-lingual projects, and these projects account for 50.2pc of grants provided.

94.5pc of the grants provided are to go to independent production companies, while the balance goes to commercial and community broadcasters.

A total of 83 eligible applications were considered for funding.

The panels comprise external experts from the television sector, subject experts from the relevant thematic areas, and BCI staff members.

Speaking about the funding granted, Michael O'Keeffe, chief executive of the BAI said: "We were especially pleased in this current round to support high quality applications in a wide variety of genres, but notably in the areas of drama, animation, children's programming and adult literacy.

The BAI will now begin the process of contract negotiations with all successful applicants.
