As Twitter and other forms of social media change and grow at an alarming rate, it can be a veritable quagmire for brands entering the fray. Over the summer Habitat was slated for applying the hashtag #iranelection to tweets completely unrelated to the topic. These and other misdemeanours by companies new to Twitter have prompted a spate of Dos and Don'ts for Twitter.
Steve Barton of Word of Mouth marketing advised companies and brands not to lie or be fake, while Darren Forsyth of 140 Character Media encouraged companies to engage in a real way in order to build up trust.
These Twitter tips add to the existing etiquette rules for the social media website, including being upfront about your twitter aspirations and whether they are personal or commercial. The cardinal rule of Twitter is to be personal and to reciprocate gracefully with tweets.
The do and the don't pronounced by George Nimeh of Iris Digital sums all the dos and don'ts up in an admirable manner: "Do be nice, and don't be an asshole." A deep mantra for life, thanks George.
