DJ Hip Op: The story so far
8 December 09

It has been just three short weeks since the 'Growing Up is Optional' Age Action Ireland video went live. The video stars one Marian Kelly as 'DJ Hip Op', an East Wall hip-hop instructor with two hip replacements under her belt (in the most literal sense). The video represents Age Action Ireland's first foray into the world of viral videos, and was directed by lauded Irish playwright Micheál Lovett and produced by Creative Productions' Richard Doyle.

The response to the short clip has been massive. The video has received almost 8,000 views on YouTube. Requests for interviews with DJ Hip Op have poured in, as a result of which Marian herself was interviewed by Morning Ireland's Eleanor Burnhill. Today she will be on the Ryan Tubridy show.

As well as interview requests, the general media have also sat up and taken notice of the extraordinary video. Numerous national newspapers including the Evening Herald and the Irish Examiner have featured the quirky story.

This wonderful reaction has helped to promote the idea of positive aging to a wide and diverse audience. It has similarly succeeded in raising the spirits of everyone out there fed up with budgets and the continuous talk of 'recession'.
