Today’s announcement from An Bord Pleanála, granting a Railway Order for a new Luas line running from St. Stephen’s Green to Broombridge, will ensure an additional and vital transport link to the new unified DIT campus at Grangegorman and a direct one-stop link to the DIT sports facilities at Broombridge, according to the President of DIT.
Welcoming the announcement, Professor Brian Norton said “This is a really important piece of city infrastructure and will underpin the development of the new DIT city-centre campus that will be only two Luas stops from O’Connell Street. Our students and staff currently are significant users of public transport, based as we are in the heart of the city. The whole campus is being developed on principles of sustainability and transport links are key. The new Luas line will provide a link from the existing Green Line in the south and the Red Line in the west of the city, directly to DIT at Broadstone, as well as linking to mainline rail on the Maynooth line. Integrating transport links in this way makes good sense, offers people options, encourages greater use of public transport and will be a major addition to Dublin city.”
Last month the Government announced that the development of the DIT campus at Grangegorman is to be accelerated, with the first 1000 students commencing their studies there in September 2014, and ultimately accommodating over 20,000 students and staff. Work begins next month on the redesign and restoration of a number of historic buildings on the site which will be brought back into use and given a new lease of life.
