This summer Clonakilty became the first and only Irish ‘Jungle City’ – part of an exciting new outdoor art project which plans to roll out in New York and Sydney later in the year. “Jungle City Clonakilty” involves the creation and permanent installation of 24 beautifully painted, life-sized endangered animals throughout the town.
A partnership between Sustainable Clonakilty and Clonakilty Chamber of Commerce, this event providing visitors and residents alike with the opportunity to explore Clonakilty and follow a colourful and fun safari trail through the streets and landmarks of the town with other fun features including “paint your own” miniature sculptures, safari tours and talking animals!
Welcoming this new and exciting project to Clonakilty and Cork, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Operations for the South West, Fiona Buckley commented:
“Fáilte Ireland’s research shows that more and more Irish families will stay at home this summer. As the summer season draws to a close, parents will naturally be looking for attractive locations with lots to do and see for all the family before the schools reopen. What better place to visit than Clonakilty’s ‘Jungle City’, where local artists and school groups have painted these magnificent sculptures which are dotted around the streets and in interesting nooks and crannies. It is well worth a visit for all the family.”
Jungle City celebrates the magnificence of the worlds’ most spectacular yet endangered wildlife, generating awareness of their plight and making everyone smile at the same time. It sees a herd of life sized Asian elephants lead a parade of brightly painted orangutans, hornbills, tigers and crocodiles through of the worlds’ most iconic towns and cities with the aim of saving their habitat and securing their survival for future generations.
