National Strategy gives Carers the recognition they deserve - Perry

July 20, 2012 14:51 378 views Category: Health

In welcoming the publication of the National Carers’ Strategy, Sligo/Nth Leitrim TD, John Perry, said that “it finally gives carers the recognition they deserve.

“The publication of this Strategy is an important start in recognising the role carers play 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and is long overdue.  Carers make an enormous contribution to society and deserve public protection and recognition for the invaluable, exhausting and emotionally draining work they carry out on a daily basis.

“This Strategy is a beginning and I’m very pleased to hear from Minister Lynch that it will be reviewed on an on-going basis and will be updated with additional recommendations suggested by carers as the country’s economic position improves.

“Family carers are the backbone of care provision in this country and we must ensure that they have consistent support and that they are included in the decision-making process around the care of their loved ones.  By involving  carers  in  the planning and decision making process  in  care  provision  sends  a  very  clear  message  that  their contribution  to  the  care  of  a  loved  one is recognised, respected and valued.

“We must also recognise and pay tribute to the invaluable work of organisations representing the interests of carers and providing valuable support and guidance to them.

“It is a key objective of Government Primary Care policy that older people and children and adults living with an illness or a disability can keep their dignity and their independence in their own homes and communities for as long as possible and carers play an important role in this process.

“This Strategy is a positive, important step in ensuring that carers receive the recognition, support and empowerment that they have always deserved.”
