On Friday last Intel selected the winner of the prestigious Intel Student award at the BT Young Scientist and Technology exhibition. Intel, now in its 14th year as a Gold Sponsor of the exhibition, awards the winning student with the prize of an all expenses trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) being held this year in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Aoife Gregg from Loreto College, Stephen’s Green was awarded the Intel Student Award for her project entitled Cryptography: A study of the Irish Language. The novel project involved a study of the characteristics of the Irish language that are relevant to cryptography, such as letter frequency. Intel has a particular focus on the Physics/Chemistry/Mathematic section at the event and it is from this group of projects that the student award winner was selected.

The winning student along with her teacher, Yseult Whitaker, will fly off in May to represent Ireland at the Pennsylvania event along with 2 other Irish projects selected through the Scifest national science exhibition and the Sentinus Young Innovators event held annually in Belfast.

In addition to the Student Award, Intel takes the opportunity to recognise the unsung heroes of the exhibition - the teachers, by presenting an Intel Educator of Excellence award to an individual teacher who has made an outstanding contribution towards the promotion and facilitation of inquiry based learning amongst students.

This award was also presented on Friday evening to Ann Blanking, a teacher from St. Mary’s College, Co. Derry. Ann will also be given the opportunity to join the Irish delegation travelling to the ISEF event in May.

Eamonn Sinnott, Intel Ireland General Manager and Vice President, Technology Manufacturing Group, attended the awards ceremony and presented the winners with their prizes, “Intel is proud to once again be involved with this event which is such an important showcase and celebration of science and technology. Exhibitions such as this play a vital role in encouraging a passion for Science, Technology and Engineering and Math which are the critical foundation for tomorrow's high-technology innovators and leaders”.

Intel is delighted to again be involved for a 14th year as a Gold Sponsor of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition - we believe that the event provides an important platform for students to engage in skills based learning. Along with sponsoring the two awards at the event, Intel participates in the Industries hall at the exhibition, showcasing Intel technology and solutions to the thousands of visitors who attend during the multi-day event.
