More than 400 representatives of science, industry, academia, culture and arts gathered last week to celebrate the official launch of Dublin as the European City of Science 2012, an initiative that Intel Ireland will be a platinum sponsor of. The event marks the beginning of an exciting and diverse year long program of science-related events that includes Europe’s largest general science conference, ESOF 2012, which will take place in the Convention Centre in July.
Dublin won the right to host the bi-annual ESOF event in a competitive bid process back in 2008 and it will be attended by some 5,000 delegates including three Nobel prize-winners, one of whom is Dr James Watson, who co-discovered DNA.
As Platinum Sponsors of the festival, Intel is proud to be a part of this year of science celebration. Attending the launch event was Director of Intel Ireland Corporate Affairs, Brendan Cannon who said “Celebrating Dublin as the European City of Science in 2012 provides us with a unique opportunity to showcase the role of science and technology as the foundations of a knowledge economy and to underpin the vast career opportunities for our young people that exist in this space. It is important to make science accessible and exciting and to demonstrate Ireland as a leading location and great place to work, research and live – Intel is delighted to be able to play a role in what promises to be a fantastic year of activities”.
The events taking place as part of the year-long celebration will demonstrate the reach of science into every aspect of our lives, including education, business, arts and sports. The full program includes photographic and art exhibitions, several theatre pieces, film festivals, tours, trails and treasure hunts, street performances, science buskers, puppet performances, large-scale interactive installations, experiments, science carnivals and public talks, debates and workshops and a fashion show.
One of these events that will take place in May at the Science Gallery is Intel’s ‘Science in the City’ showcase which will give members of the public the opportunity to interact with Intel technology and research.
