Irish Cancer Society wants women to join their Cork Mini Marathon team and support local cancer services

The Irish Cancer Society is appealing to women in Co. Cork to join their mini marathon team on 16^th September and help support the roll out of ‘Care to Drive’ this coming September in Cork University Hospital.

Care to Drive is a community-based volunteer driving service for cancer patients. Under this scheme carefully selected and trained volunteers collect the patients from their homes and drive them to their appointments and back to their homes following these appointments. Patients are provided with a safe, comfortable and confidential transport service.

By joining the Irish Cancer Society mini marathon team, you will be supporting the roll-out of cancer services in your community. Since 2010, 96 drivers had completed 1,109 journeys for 120 patients and covered approximately 48, 379 km.

In 2011, nearly 500 people took part in mini-marathons in the Munster region in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. To help roll out the ‘Care to Drive’ programme, the target for this year is to increase this number to 800 participants.

Cancer, its prevention, diagnosis and treatment are a major challenge for our society. Approximately 30,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer inIrelandin 2010 and cancer will affect one in three people in Ireland during their lifetime. New cancer cases are expected to reach over 43,000 in the year 2020.

The Irish Cancer Society is appealing to all female runners to come together with their friends, families and colleagues and take part in any of the following mini marathons in the Evening Echo Cork Mini Marathon on 16^th September; 2012 – Killarney – 8^th September; Tipperary – 30^th September and Limerick – Mid October.
