Recruits called up for one-day endurance test to help save lives for Irish Heart Foundation and Mercy Hospital Foundation
Fitness fanatics across the country are being called upon to join in the challenge of the summer – cycle to Ireland’s highest peak and then climb it, all in one day!
The Bike n Hike challenge, organised in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation and Mercy Hospital Foundation, will play host to a 250 strong team of participants, as they battle against one another in a unified fight to save more lives from heart disease, stroke and other life threatening illnesses.
Those who choose to accept the challenge will be up against the clock to complete a 100km cycle from Cork to the base of Carrauntouhil, followed by a four-hour guided hike to the mountain’s summit at 3,406ft. The exhilarating endurance test is not for the faint-hearted, with contestants set to burn up to 6,000 calories in just one day.
Anne Riordan, co-organiser of the Bike n Hike and regional fundraiser with the Irish Heart Foundation, the national charity fighting heart disease and stroke, said: “The Bike n Hike is the ultimate endurance challenge for cyclists and hikers alike who want to push themselves to the limit and combine two great activities in one big day charity event. Every year the challenge grows in popularity and with limited spaces available I encourage people to register now for €20 to secure their place. Each contestant must pledge to raise €200 which will be split between the Irish Heart Foundation and Mercy Hospital Foundation. Contestants are guaranteed to enjoy a fantastic atmosphere on the race day with lunch included at the base of Carrauntouhil and experienced mountain guides. There will also be a post-race celebratory dinner in the evening where participants can catch up with one another on the day’s events.”
