ISPCC Releases

The recent case of the horrific abuse inflicted on a ten month old baby, highlights the fact that abuse is not just an historical event but a current issue that needs to be addressed if we are to ensure that children are protected.

Through its support line [1] the ISPCC is aware that often members of the public are unsure of what to do if they are concerned about a child. Caroline O’Sullivan of the ISPCC today said; “We hear from people worried about children in their extended families, or in their local communities, and very often they are unsure about who to turn to, or who to talk to about these concerns.”

Children First: National Guidance on the Protection and Welfare of Children states that any potential risk or grounds for concern about the safety of a child should be reported to the HSE Children and Family services. Members of the public should contact the Duty Social Worker in their area to discuss any concerns they may have. 

Ms O’Sullivan continues: “In society we all have a duty of care to children; children must come first.  Historically, Ireland has failed to protect many vulnerable children from abuse and neglect.  We must now develop as a society that does not tolerate the abuse of children and takes action when required to ensure their protection.”
