EU REFERENDUM COULD GO AHEAD NEXT YEAR

(07 Dec 2011) Ireland could be forced back to the polls as early as next year if Euro talks in Brussels don’t go according to plan. With Day 1 of a two-day EU summit scheduled to kick off tomorrow, bookies Paddy Power are now quoting 5/6 that a referendum on a new EU treaty will be held in Ireland in 2012.   

With European leaders scrambling together in a last ditch attempt to save the Euro, Paddy Power have now tightened the odds on the Eurozone breaking up before 2015 to 2/9. The odds on it breaking up in the next twelve months are just 4/6.

And with uncertainty still surrounding the future of the Euro, punters are also still speculating as to what currency the Republic will be using come December 2015. Paddy Power have cut the odds on a punt revival from 5/2 to 2/1.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: “A referendum is the last thing people want to see next year but at this stage it’s beginning to look like Europe is running out of options”.
