The Integration Centre Releases

The Integration Centre will not proceed with complaint to Gardai regarding Judge Devins

August 2, 2012 16:36 412 views No comment Category: Irish

In light of Judge Mary Devins’ unreserved apology to the Polish community and those affected by her bigoted remarks we have decided not to proceed with our complaint to the Gardai

However, we will continue to monitor statements made by public servants including judges and where we think appropriate we will make interventions utilising whatever mechanisms exist in the state.

Killian Forde of The Integration Centre says "Language has consequences. And it’s vital that those in positions of influence and power think about their words. We cannot allow for extremist language to become mainstream and legitimised."

"Judge Devins, when on the bench, is representing the state. This state can ill afford to be seen as a backward, unwelcoming country."

"The role that migrants play in our economy is crucial. Without them and their skills, not a single multinational would base their Head Quarters here."

"Judge Devins’ remarks and those of other judges in the recent past, proffering biased views, make the need clear for the Judicial Conduct Committee to be established."
